“Whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst."
(John 4:14). The sight of a mountain waterfall is always a refreshing image. Living in the context of the current climate crisis (with the consequent rise in flooding, droughts and disrupted rainfall), brings a new awareness of our dependence on water. In John’s gospel Jesus likens himself to being ‘living water’, offering constant spiritual renewal and refreshment. The verse and image offer a reminder of the living source of strength and hope in all circumstances and for all occasions.
“Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine”
(Isaiah 43:1). Baptism, First Holy Communion and Confirmation are all ceremonies where people are named and celebrated as part of the family of God, whether through individual decision or as an act of faith by their family. This verse and image is a reminder of the promise that is reinforced by that ceremony – the promise that whatever decision they may take, God sees them as his precious child. The image evokes the instant in which the deer becomes aware they are being watched; in this case through a gaze of love.
"Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ”
(Philippians 1:2). This is a beautiful greeting from St Paul to friends in one of the churches he founded which reinforces both the faith of the sender and receiver. It is a phrase that sets day-to-day tasks in the bigger perspective of doing everything within the love of God. The image conveys a sense of space and serenity. Whilst this phrase could be a blessing for any individual, this design could be personalised with the name of a particular church setting or organisation, perhaps as a gift from or to someone leaving, or to celebrate an anniversary as an encouragement.
"But God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever."
(Psalm 73.26). The Psalms are a wonderful source of frank views, often even downright complaints, about life’s challenges. I love this phrase because of the way that the first word but makes all the difference between a glib statement and a hard-won, deliberate decision to declare that his strength comes from God, despite everything. The oak tree has always been a symbol of strength, particularly in the UK, and is a wonderful image that could offer encouragement in challenging times.
“To see a World in a Grain of Sand And a Heaven in a Wild Flower, Hold Infinity in the Palm of your Hand, And Eternity in an Hour.”
The name 'Grain of Sand' comes from a childhood gift: a small silver clock engraved with William Blake's words from Auguries of Innocence about finding a world in a grain of sand. That idea runs through everything here. The reflections cover personal feelings, family dynamics, climate change and faith, all rooted in the belief that life works best when we notice and care for the larger wholes we're part of. Rooted in Christian faith, written to resonate with all.
